A decade ago, at Morgan Stanley, prior to the Global Financial Crisis, employees could enjoy a range of perks, including substantial bonuses, business class flights (and first class for higher-ranking employees on overnight flights), access to luxurious hotels, top-rated restaurants and bars, as well as paid events for networking with clients. In addition, technical support staff was always available to help with any technology-related issues. Traders had the luxury of multiple monitors, while employees had access to subsidized amenities such as gyms, swimming pools, squash courts, and spas. Working past 8 pm often meant a free dinner, while working past 10 pm meant a chauffeur would be provided to take you home. The bank provided excellent medical coverage and pension plans, as well as subsidized staff canteens and opportunities to learn new skills, such as language courses. Furthermore, if an employee found themselves in a difficult situation such as imprisonment in a foreign country, investment banks were known to go to great lengths to help their employees.
